Comfortably Human

It might only be an alley,
silent and serene,
home to the creeping ivy
draping the stonewall,
grounds for the cigarette butts
and empty brown beer bottles
with the hum of the generator
divided behind the metal fence,
(strictly off limits!)
but for this moment,
as the sun guilds the sky
in the hue of a passion fruit,
no one else walks this way home
or this way to work.
If only for a minute,
it belongs to us,
and we can be
quite comfortably
human.
